🌱 Now’s the Time to Feed Your Garden 

As your garden bursts back into life, it’s the perfect moment to give your plants a little extra support. You might be wondering—do my plants really need fertiliser, which one should I use, and how do I apply it properly? 

Fertilisers aren’t about keeping plants alive—they’re about helping them truly thrive. From the first buds of spring through to flowers, fruit and strong leafy growth, plants need plenty of energy. Over time, nutrients in the soil get used up, and that’s where feeding comes in—giving your plants everything they need to grow strong, healthy and full of colour. 

The key is timing. Start feeding when plants begin actively growing in spring, and continue through the summer months while they’re putting on their best show. 

A few helpful tips: 

  • If your soil is rich, well-mulched and healthy, you may not need much fertiliser at all  
  • Plants in pots and containers will always need regular feeding—they rely entirely on you  
  • Trees and shrubs usually only need feeding once in early spring (and often not at all)  
  • Focus feeding on bedding plants, fruit and vegetables for the best results  

As growth slows towards autumn, it’s time to ease off—plants are preparing to rest, not grow. 

🌿 Choosing the Right Fertiliser 

There’s a wide range of fertilisers to suit every garden style: 

  • Organic options like compost, well-rotted manure, mushroom compost and seaweed feed your soil as well as your plants  
  • Liquid feeds (including seaweed and plant-based) are quick and easy—perfect for regular feeding  
  • Slow or controlled-release fertilisers provide a steady supply of nutrients over time  
  • Granules, powders and pellets offer a more concentrated boost when needed  

You can even make your own natural feed using comfrey or nettles steeped in water—a traditional favourite! 

💧 How to Apply Fertiliser 

The most important rule? Follow the instructions. 

Different fertilisers are applied in different ways: 

  • Some need diluting with water  
  • Others are sprinkled onto the soil  
  • Some are mixed in when planting  

Always avoid overfeeding—more isn’t better. And choose products that are safe for wildlife, pets and children wherever possible.
